Internship with UNDP
Connecting a practitioner with an international organization.
Colleagues,
The PHREE-Way Secretariat (DiMP and CHC), is pleased to inform you that the aim of connecting practitioners with international organizations in the field is beginning to be realized. We are in the process of making final arrangements for the placement of Ameen Benjamin, a widely experienced candidate from South Africa, as an intern with the UNDP program in Samoa. The Disaster Mitigation for Sustainable Livelihoods (DiMP), at the University of Cape Town in South Africa may be credited for much of the work required to accomplish this outcome. The Center for Humanitarian Cooperation (CHC), was able to facilitate the process through its ongoing cooperation with the Monterey Institute of International Studies (MIIS) in Monterey, California. A recent graduate of the newly developed Applied Humanitarian Studies program at MIIS, has been working with UNDP in Samoa and was an invaluable link.
This initiative is being supported by USAID/OFDA, and will, we hope, establish a foundation for the realization of one of the central tenets in the PHREE-Way terms of reference.

Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that I have commenced my internship with UNDP Multi-Country Office (MCO) for Samoa, Cook Islands, Tokelau and Niue on the 23 February 2009. The internship will last for 6 months from the date of commencement. Within the 2 weeks of work thus far, I have already learnt alot about the UN/UNDP organizational structure as well as other technical skills. This promises to be a great learning experience that can be hopefully upscaled to allow other African risk researchers similar opportunities.
I sincerely thank USAID/OFDA for their generous funding in order to enable this opportunity. A big thank you also goes to the PHREEway Consortium for enabling this initiative.UNDP MCO in Samoa is also greatfully acknowledged for agreeing to this internship. In particular Justin Locke is acknowledged for informing us of this opportunity. Finally Dr. Ailsa Holloway from DiMP/UCT is sincerely thanked for her hard work in ensuring that this entire process materialized.
