Awareness Creation Workshop on Disaster Risk Reduction Management
ActionAid Ghana is organising a workshop to broaden the knowledge base on issues of disaster risk reduction and climate change.
AWARENESS CREATION WORKSHOP ON DISASTER RISK REDUCTION MANAGEMENT
DISASTER RISK REDUCTION – EVERYBODY’S BUSINESS!
“We cannot stop natural calamities but we can and must better equip individuals and communities to withstand them.” former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan.
After the launching last year of disaster risk reduction (DRR)management in the country last year, ActionAid in Ghana followed it up with a stakeholder's roundtable conference on the baseline project report in March this year.
Since then, it has been noted that the level of knowledge on DRR and climate change among the citizenry is not as high as would engender appropriate actions to reduce risks.
Therefore it has become necessary for ActionAid to organise a workshop where more stakeholders will use two days to deliberate, understand and be well grounded on the issues involved.
Climate change is now one of the greatest obstacles to ending poverty and realising rights. The numbers of people vulnerable to poverty as a result of climate change are likely to increase. Many households will be forced to migrate in search of new homes and livelihoods, while the incidence of climate-related disasters is likely to increase. A growing number of people will be vulnerable to flooding and inundation, drought and disease. This is the reason why disaster risk reduction must be promoted as everybody’s business in Ghana.
Building a culture of safety at all levels and especially the community level is imperative!
