Humanitarian Service Science and Engineering (HSS&E) can be viewed as an emerging frontier in engineering research that explores how our ability to effectively design, evaluate, and predict the behavior of market-based service systems can be extended into non-profit areas and situations that are invariably chaotic, disrupted, and complicated by complex parameters and goals.
The Seattle workshop will be highly interdisciplinary involving not only experts from many relevant disciplines, but also professionals from the humanitarian sector, by invitation only. During an all-day, highly interactive meeting we will develop our collective wisdom on four questions:
- What are the critical cutting-edge research issues addressed by HSS&E?
- Who are the community of researchers prepared to address these issues?
- How are these issues being addressed by existing fields of research?
- Is HSS&E research a distinct, sustainable area?
